Polar Instruments

1. Andy Shaughnessy interviews me at PCB West on the subject of latest enhancements in Polar tools for 2018 including the radical enhancements for Speedstack Si.

2. How to model high speed transmission line characteristics with data sheet values using both Keysight ADS(TM) and Polar Si9000e: – Bert Simonovich.

3. Loss tangent – take care with small numbers:

Tangential thoughts is my take on being careful when using loss tangent values, just because there are a couple of leading zeros – it doesn’t reduce the significance of
the number: Find all these and more on the Polar News page:

INVITATION:  Productronica 2017 is only a couple of weeks away, as always we have 2 stands, one in A1 the T&M hall, and one in B3 The PCB hall.

We will be previewing the latest Speedstack and Si9000e, and will have a limited number of fully functional licenses which run till December 31st to give away  – so make sure if you visit – that you arrive early in the week.

Hermann Reischer, Neil Chamberlain, Paul Carre, Sanket Roy from Polar India, and Amit Bhardwaj from Polar Asia Pacific will also be attending the show.

There will also be limited numbers of my book “Secrets of High-Speed PCBs” – we will be giving away one copy per day on each stand.

Hope to see you if you are visiting. (Stands A1.555 and B3.138)

ESA approval for Ventec material in Amphenol Invotec rigid & flex-rigid production

Amphenol Invotec and Ventec International are delighted to announce that Ventec’s VT-901 polyimide material is now fully qualified by ESA in Amphenol Invotec’s manufacturing process for rigid and Flex-rigid PCBs.

With high Td (395), a Tg of 250oC and Low-Axis CTE (50), Ventec’s VT-901 polyimide material provides the extremely high reliability performance demanded by Amphenol Invotec’s space-level flex & flex-rigid PCB manufacturing process that meets ESA requirements. Amphenol Invotec’s ESA approved Tamworth facility and the AS9100 accreditation of Ventec’s manufacturing and distribution facilities clearly position both companies as world leaders in the supply of high-reliability aerospace PCB solutions.

Ventec manufactures all VT-901 polyimide using specially designed treaters with multiple stage filtration systems and 100% Automated Optical Inspection (AOI) for prepreg FOD-control. The same specialist equipment is used for the production of thin-core laminates for use in the most demanding space and aerospace PCB applications.

Ventec and Invotec have formed a long-term working partnership and through mutual understanding and close cooperation are setting the standards for cleanliness of materials and finished PCBs, putting both companies in a market-leading position within the space and aerospace electronics supply chain.

Tim Tatton, Amphenol Invotec’s General Manager, says: ‘Amphenol Invotec and Ventec are perfectly aligned and committed to incorporate a wide range of solutions into the most demanding of applications and environments.’

Mark Goodwin, Ventec COO Europe and USA, commented: ‘The ESA approval further demonstrates the thermal robustness of Ventec VT-901 polyimide and its suitability for use in high reliability rigid and flex rigid multi-layers in the demanding aerospace sector.’

Electra Polymers to Exhibit Soldermask for the Digital Era at productronica

Electra Polymers Ltd will be showcasing their soldermasks for the digital era at this year’s productronica. Products will include soldermask for direct image (DI) exposure systems and ink jetable soldermask.

EMP110 DI is Electra’s latest soldermask for DI systems, tried and tested on multiple light engines with a variety of wavelength combinations. This robust, reliable and fast exposing system has now been used for several years at leading PCB companies. EMP110 DI formulation has been engineered to deliver straight sidewalls and fine solder-dam resolution over the wide range of coating thicknesses associated with screen-printed and sprayed PCBs. Optimised radiation curing characteristics deliver high levels of through-cure at low energy levels without compromise in surface hardness or chemical resistance. EMP110 DI has been a real success story for Electra taking the Electra name and products to new heights in the new digital era.

New developments in the Electra range for the digital era are inkjet soldermask that will meet the needs of PCB manufactures and OEM’s alike. Electra’s inkjet soldermask will meet and exceed SM840 and UL94V-0 requirements as well as being halogen free, RoHS and REACH compliant with no SVHC content. In addition to the inkjet soldermask, Electra has a range of complementary inkjet products including legend and etch resists.

Discuss and learn more at Messe Munchen ( Booth 140, Hall B3) from 14-17 November 2017.

Institute of Circuit Technology

Evening Seminar

Majestic Hotel,

Tuesday 5th December 2017

Registration is from 17:30, with the Seminar commencing at 18.00.

The complete programme will be announced later, but so far we have Emma Hudson of UL, will present on the topic of solder limits. Solder Limits used for recognised PCBs and materials. Many people still use the old solder float test type limits although they may not actually represent the soldering profiles to which boards are now exposed.

Then Andy Cobley of Coventry University will update us on two new projects looking at using a biological approach to reclaiming metal from PCB waste and also

the metallisation of textiles and fabrics for wearables (MATUREOLIFE)

5th June at the Beaulieu Motor Museum

9th – 12th APRIL, with the first day at Merlin pcb, Deeside and then at Chester University.

BGA, QFN Fine Pitch Rework Experience Live

21st November 2017, Henkel, Hemel Hempstead, UK

Starting at 9.30am, coffee at 9.00am and finishing at 4.00pm

To book your workshop place or for further information Click Here

Test your skills on different area array rework systems with QFN and BGA packages. Our test board was recently featured in the IPC, NPL & SMART Group Rework Experience and you can see your own results under x-ray inspection. During the session delegates can rework one of the Rework Experience Test Boards and have demonstrations of different methods of reworking packages with solder paste print, dip paste and gel paste and see the benefits of different techniques. Each delegate will receive a SMART Group Certificate of attendance.

Table Top Exhibition space will be limited at this event, book you place early to avoid disappointment Click Here

It’s quite a few years since SMART Group held one of its popular rework workshops so here is a chance to try out new rework stencils produced with polyimide, latest dip paste products. We hope to feature a range of different convection and IR rework systems with semi and fully automated software and the latest solder removal methods

Each delegate will receive a copy of all the slides presented plus a set of SMART Group Rework and Repair Poster Sets
