IPC Announces New ESD Control Certification Courses on IPC EDGE

Courses provide professional credentials for Certified ESD Trainers (CETs) and ESD Certified Operators (ECOs)

BANNOCKBURN, Ill., USA, October 13, 2016 IPC – Association Connecting Electronics Industries®, is announcing an ESD (Electrostatic Discharge) Control certification course for electronics assembly trainers and operators. The courses and certifications will be delivered on the IPC learning management system, IPC EDGE. Together with theEOS/ESD Association, Inc., IPC has developed these standardized ESD training and certification courses for the electronics industry to train operators and trainers on ESD controls and best practices. This online ESD Certification Program allows users to validate their knowledge and skills by passing an exam on ESD principles. For trainers, the ESD certification course was developed with an advanced training program to train instructors, thereby providing the necessary knowledge to help develop an effective ESD training program.

With semiconductor devices becoming more ESD sensitive every day, many companies require ESD training that clearly outlines the specific ESD technical requirements of the organization where they work. Ronald Gibson, certification chair for the EOS/ESD Association, Inc., indicates that, “Education is the key requirement in preparing manufacturing to handle future ESD sensitive device designs and will be required throughout all facets of the organization from the personnel handling the products to engineering and supervisors or management.” This course provides the training needed to master both basic and advanced topics pertaining to ESD. Further, compliance with this program, when adopted, applies to any person in the organization that handles ESD sensitive products.

Through this course, operators will learn to demonstrate commitment to rigorous performance requirements, master expertise and commitment to quality and compliancy of ESD practices, meet the requirements for ANSI/S20.20 for ESD control, and gain valuable industry recognition within the electronics industry supply chain. In the end, completing the course and passing the exam will allow operators to facilitate quality assurance initiatives that have become important throughout the global electronics industry.

As a result, certified operators will be best prepared to control ESD within their own operations.  Companies will be provided with better skilled employees capable of managing common ESD practices worldwide. For more information on this training and certification course, visit www.ipc.org/edge.

Mayim Bialik Chosen as Opening Keynote at IPC APEX EXPO 2017

Industry votes to hear from actress and neuroscientist

Actress and neuroscientist, Mayim Bialik, has been selected through a vote of electronics industry professionals to present the opening keynote at IPC APEX EXPO® on Tuesday, February 14, 2017 in San Diego.

Bialik will present, “The Big Bang Theory: Making Science Cool (& Funny)” and will discuss how the show, “The Big Bang Theory” has helped to break down perceived science “barriers” to make it cool and fun.

On the show, Bialik plays neurobiologist Amy Farrah Fowler and uses her own Ph.D. in neuroscience as the foundation for her unforgettable character. She’ll share her keen scientific mind and her wonderful sense of humor as she explores the work of the brain, of behavioral development, of her life as an actress and scientist, and of the special relationship that exists between “The Big Bang Theory” and its audience.

“We’ve had great success asking industry to vote for the opening keynote and we’re thrilled to have Ms. Bialik speak to attendees at IPC APEX EXPO 2017, said Alicia Balonek, senior director, trade shows and events. “As a result of opening the vote to industry, we’ve had standing-room attendance at past opening keynotes. Most important, IPC is making a commitment to deliver what members and industry want and we’ll continue to elevate the experience of this event.”

Bialik’s opening keynote is free to all registered IPC APEX EXPO attendees. The conference and exhibition will run February 14–16, 2017. For more information, visit www.IPCAPEXEXPO.org.

World PCB Production in 2015 Estimated at $58.6 Billion

IPC World PCB Production Report Released

The world market for printed circuit boards (PCBs) reached an estimated $58.6 billion in value in 2015 according to IPC’s  World PCB Production Report for the Year 2015. This represents a nominal decrease of 2.7 percent from 2014, but factoring out the effects of exchange rate fluctuations, the growth of PCB output was actually up 2.0 percent in real terms.

According to the report, real growth in the value of PCB production in 2015 was up in most regions of the world in 2015. In the Americas, the industry experienced a decline with real growth of -2.7 percent. Asia now accounts for 91 percent of world PCB production. The world PCB market in 2016 is expected to continue experiencing slow growth in real terms.

Developed by a team of the world’s leading PCB industry analysts, the annual study is the definitive source of PCB production data. It includes estimates of the value of PCB production in 11 product categories in each of the world’s major PCB-producing countries and regions. Data within the report show that the worldwide flexible circuit growth far outpaced rigid PCB production, which decreased. The report also contains commentary on regional industry trends and historical data on PCB production worldwide.

“Generally slow growth in the worldwide electronics market is expected for the next few years, but some segments of the industry are outpacing others,” says Sharon Starr, IPC director of market research. “The markets for mobile devices and automotive electronics are seen as high-growth segments. These markets, along with the growing demand for interconnected devices and wearable electronics, are expected to keep the PCB industry growing faster than the economy.”

World PCB Production Report for the Year 2015 is available to IPC members for $475; the price for nonmembers is $950. For more information or to purchase the report, visit www.ipc.org/2015WorldPCB.
